Glowworm Caves

These limestone caves are home to the larvae of a mosquito kind that glow in the dark. They do this to attract other insect, which they then devour, with a sort of fishing lines(see the right picture above) . The glowworm caves can be reached by boats that leave from Te Anau. The caves lie in a lake in the Murchison mountains, and is part of a very delicate ecosystem. These mountains are the home of the endangered Takahe, a bird species that is nearly extinct. The Te Anau lake is the second largest lake in New Zealand and the only way to view these caves is with a commercially guided tour per boat (as mentioned above). The operator which organizes these tours is Real Journeys.
