Hotels/hostels in New Zealand

To get you started,  there are a few hotels you can visit in three classes: high, middle and low price range. This way you can book your hotel so you're sure you have a place to sleep when you arrive from the airport for instance. There are different classes of accommodations: humble pubs, midrange hotels, and the expensive international hotels. Humble pubs are pubs which have some beds upstairs. These are relatively cheap, however some pubs are best avoided and not very safe for woman travelers. Below, you can find some hotels in each of the big cities to give you a start.
Further,
New Zealand has a lot of backpacker hostels. These vary from really small, where you stay with a family, to very large in the cities.  There are some organizations were you pay a fee of 30 dollars to stay at their hostels, and then you get a discount per night of 2-4 dollar. You can find some links of these hostel organizations below.

These are relatively cheap, however some pubs are best avoided and not very safe for woman travelers. Women traveling on their own or with family might prefer hotels or small timeshare resorts. These are still affordable but often provide onsite security and more privacy.
